Perry: ‘Nothing’ to embarrass supporters

Texas Governor Rick Perry assured an audience of potential donors last weekend that there is “nothing” in his personal life that will embarrass them should they support his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

People who attended the gathering, at the ranch of a Perry supporter near Austin, told the Texas Tribune that Perry made his comment in response to a polite but rather blunt question from one of the 200 some people at the private event.

The gathering included right-wing anti-gay activists who are said to be, uncommitted, as yet, to any Republican presidential candidate –including Focus on the Family’s James Dobson and Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins.

The Texas Tribune said attendees quizzed Perry –and his wife Anita– on a number of hot-button issues, including same-sex marriage. Mrs. Perry said she agrees with her husband’s opposition to same-sex marriage.

Well, he’s right in a sense. His supporters won’t be embarrassed. Most of the rest of us, however, are deeply embarrassed that such a candidate has bubbled up from the American depths.
